WHAT IS UIL MUSIC MEMORY?
UIL Music Memory Contest is an in-depth study of fine pieces of music literature taken from a wide spectrum of music genres to expose students to great composers, their lives and their music. In the course of preparing for the contest, students should be given the opportunity to describe and analyze the music, relate the music to history, to society and to culture, and to evaluate musical performance.
HOW DOES THE CONTEST WORK?
Students will listen to approximately 20 seconds of up to 16 musical selections and identify the name of the major work, selection and the name of the composer. To receive full credit for an answer, all information about the music selection must be complete as shown on the official list. Spelling and punctuation are considered in the grading of this contest.
Grades 3 and 4 have a matching portion followed by listening identification. Grades 5 and 6 are based entirely on listening identification, with contestants writing the composer and title for each selection as they hear them. Both test formats include a four-selection tiebreaker section.

SECOND GRADE PILOT PROGRAM
For the 2nd grade pilot contest, the list will be reduced to 10 selections. The Official List is highlighted to indicate which 10 pieces will be included for grade 2. In selecting the 10 2nd grade pieces, the goal is to include the pieces that will be most accessible and engaging for younger children, while also representing a varied range of composers and genres.
Grade 2 will use a simplified version of the grade 3/4 format. Contestants will use a word bank to match composer names with selection titles. Then they will have a listening identification section. Listening selections will focus on major themes from each piece. There is no tiebreaker section.
